Campania

Campania
Campania is a wine region in southern Italy famous for fresh volcanic whites and powerful red wines. It is especially known for three things:
- White wines made from Fiano and Greco
- Red wines made from Aglianico
- Volcanic wines from areas near Naples and Mount Vesuvius
Where the wines come from
Inland hills (Irpinia)
This is where many of the best wines come from. The climate is cooler, which helps grapes keep freshness.
Famous wines include Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, and Taurasi.
Near Naples (volcanic areas)
Places like Campi Flegrei and Vesuvio make wines that can taste a little salty and smoky because of volcanic soils.
Coast and islands
Areas like Amalfi and Ischia make smaller amounts of wine, often fresh and influenced by the sea.
Main grapes and flavours
White grapes
- Fiano: richer white with pear and nutty notes
- Greco: crisp, mineral white with a firm finish
- Falanghina: fresh citrus and floral flavours
- Asprinio: very sharp, high-acid white (sometimes sparkling)
Red grapes
- Aglianico: big, tannic, ageworthy reds (like Taurasi)
- Piedirosso: lighter red with savoury, volcanic character
Summary
Campania makes some of Italy’s most interesting wines, from structured whites to long-lived reds.
Volcanic soils and cooler inland hills help give these wines freshness, structure, and personality.
