Orange Wines

Orange (Amber) Wines — Beginner
The simple definition
Orange wine is white wine made with the grape skins left in contact for longer, so it becomes darker, more textured, and a little tannic.
What it tastes like
You might notice:
- orange peel or citrus pith
- dried apricot
- tea-like flavours
- herbs and spice
It can also feel slightly drying on your gums (that’s tannin).
Why people like it
Orange wines are often great with food—especially dishes that are:
- spicy
- garlicky
- grilled
- rich and fatty
- full of umami (like soy, mushrooms, aged cheese)
Where it comes from
- Georgia (very traditional clay-vessel wines)
- North-east Italy & nearby Slovenia (famous modern orange-wine region)
- Portugal (Alentejo) (talha wines made in clay)
Easy pairing ideas
- roast chicken with herbs
- charred vegetables
- hard cheeses

What to watch out for
Orange wines can range from light and fresh to quite tannic. If you’re new, ask for a lighter skin-contact white.
