Priorat

Priorat
1. Where It Is
Priorat is a small, mountainous wine region in Catalonia, northeastern Spain.
It is one of only two areas in Spain with the highest quality status, called DOQ (DOCa), along with Rioja.
The region is famous for its steep slate hills, very old vines, and powerful red wines.
2. What It’s Like
The landscape is dramatic — vineyards cling to rocky slopes made of llicorella, a type of dark slate mixed with quartz.
The climate is hot and dry during the day, but cool at night, helping grapes stay balanced.
Because the vines grow in poor, rocky soil, they make very little fruit, but the grapes are full of flavour.
3. The Grapes
| Grape | Colour | Role in the Wine | Typical Flavours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garnatxa (Grenache) | Red | Brings warmth and fruit | Cherry, plum, spice |
| Carinyena (Carignan) | Red | Adds colour and structure | Black fruit, earth, herbs |
| Syrah | Red | Gives richness and body | Blackberry, pepper |
| Garnatxa Blanca | White | Used for a few white wines | Pear, almond, honey |
These grapes are often blended together to create rich, intense red wines.
4. The Wines
Most Priorat wines are deep, powerful reds with flavours of dark fruit, spice, and minerals.
They have firm tannins, high alcohol, and a long, dry finish.
Some small amounts of white wine are also made — smooth, slightly nutty, and fresh.
The best Priorat wines can age for 20 years or more.
5. How It’s Made
Because the vineyards are on steep terraces, almost everything is done by hand.
Yields are very low — each vine produces only a small amount of fruit.
Most wines are fermented in stainless steel or large oak vats, then aged in oak barrels to soften the tannins.
6. The Villages
The main wine villages include Gratallops, Porrera, Poboleda, Scala Dei, and La Morera.
Each has its own style:
- Gratallops: warm and ripe
- Porrera: cooler and structured
- Poboleda: higher altitude, fresher
- Scala Dei: elegant and mineral
7. Famous Producers
Álvaro Palacios (L’Ermita) • Clos Mogador (René Barbier) • Clos Erasmus • Mas Doix • Vall Llach • Scala Dei
These wineries helped make Priorat world famous for high-quality red wines.
8. Summary
Priorat is a tiny but world-class wine region that makes bold, complex reds from old vines grown on rocky hillsides.
The wines are powerful but balanced, with rich fruit and a distinct taste of the slate soil.
It’s one of Spain’s most exciting regions, showing how hard work and tough land can make truly great wine.
