Austria

Austria is best known for fresh white wines, especially from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, but it also makes good red wines, sparkling wines, and some famous sweet wines.

1. What Austria is known for

Austria’s wine reputation is built on four main things:

  • Dry white wines from regions along the Danube
  • Red wines from warmer eastern areas
  • Sweet wines made near Lake Neusiedl
  • Aromatic whites from Styria

2. Main grapes

White grapes

  • Grüner Veltliner — Austria’s most famous grape; fresh, peppery, and sometimes rich
  • Riesling — dry, stony, and high in acidity
  • Sauvignon Blanc — especially important in Styria
  • Welschriesling — often used in sweet wines

Black grapes

  • Blaufränkisch — Austria’s most serious red grape
  • Zweigelt — fruitier and softer red wine
  • Blauer Wildbacher — used for Schilcher rosé

3. Main regions

Lower Austria

The most important area for dry white wines, especially Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.

Burgenland

Warmer and better for red wines and sweet wines.

Styria

A hillier and wetter region known for very aromatic white wines.

Vienna

Famous for Wiener Gemischter Satz, a white field blend made from different grape varieties grown together.

4. Sweet wines

Austria is also known for sweet wines made in humid areas near Lake Neusiedl.

Important names:

  • Beerenauslese
  • Trockenbeerenauslese
  • Eiswein
  • Ruster Ausbruch

These wines are sweet but usually still fresh because they keep good acidity.

5. Summary

Austria is a wine country with a very clear identity: fresh whites, structured reds, aromatic Styrian wines, and excellent sweet wines. Grüner Veltliner is the signature grape, but Austria also makes distinctive wines from Riesling, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and Sauvignon Blanc.
